Deep Red (1975) is a landmark film in the career of director Dario Argento and a defining entry in the giallo genre — a uniquely Italian blend of mystery, psychological horror, and stylized violence. The film follows Marcus Daly, an English pianist living in Italy (played by David Hemmings), who witnesses the brutal murder of a psychic and becomes obsessed with uncovering the identity of the killer. As he digs deeper, the line between reality and nightmare blurs, leading to a chilling and unexpected conclusion. Deep Red is celebrated for its masterful suspense, intricate plot, and stunning visual composition. The film’s haunting score, composed by the progressive rock band Goblin in collaboration with Argento, adds an extra layer of tension and atmosphere.
The director had already gained attention with his so-called ‘Animal Trilogy’ — The Bird with the Crystal Plumage (1970), The Cat o' Nine Tails (1971), and Four Flies on Grey Velvet (1971) — but Deep Red marked a major artistic leap. Here, Argento fully embraced a more elaborate and operatic style, using dynamic camera movements, vivid colours, and complex set-pieces that would become hallmarks of his work.
Following the success of Deep Red, Argento went on to create Suspiria (1977), arguably his masterpiece, a supernatural horror film known for its hallucinatory visuals and surreal atmosphere. Throughout his career, Argento has been celebrated for his ability to craft films that are as visually stunning as they are terrifying. His influence can be seen in the works of directors like John Carpenter, Brian De Palma, and Guillermo del Toro.
